Amid the coronavirus, frontliners risk their life and limbs just to save others. Sadly, since they are the ones at the frontline, they also face greater risks than the rest of the population. Among them is this nurse, who continued working in the hospital despite a persistent cramp in her right leg which resulted in an amputation. As it turns out, this cramp is a tumor that will soon change the course of her life.
The heartbreaking story of Sette Buenaventura made headlines all over the world. She is a nurse working in the Salford Royal Hospital, treating patients who tested positive for COVID-19.
Due to shortage of hospital staff amid the pandemic, Sette had no other choice but to continue working despite having her own problems.

According to reports, way back in August 2020, the young nurse has been bothered by a persistent cramp in her right leg. She still chose to go to work, and for eight weeks, Sette ignored her leg cramp.
But it came to a point when Sette is already experiencing difficulty in walking due to her aching leg. At first, she assumed that it was only the side effect of being on her feet all day.
“When COVID-19 kicked off, we worked flat out, we didn’t have time to worry about aches and pains. We were there every hour to help anyone who needed us, and I got a real taste for that level of commitment. That is what working in hospitals is like – you forget about your own pains because you’re busy helping people, but everything comes at a cost.”
When she had her leg checked, Sette was devastated to find out that there was a cancerous tumor in her right calf.

By the time the doctors were able to check her tumor, it had already grown to the size of a golf ball. They cannot risk the tumor spreading to other parts of her body, so Sette agreed to amputating her right calf in order to remove the tumor.
Sette understood that amputation was her only chance of survival. She was soon fitted with a prosthetic leg that would replace her right calf. According to the nurse, she is soon looking forward to returning to work so she can continue helping people in need.
“I like to look after myself and try my best to be healthy. I work in healthcare and never expected this to happen to me. I think it’s really important for anyone with a lingering pain to go and get it checked out. If I had caught this sooner, I would probably be in a different position now,” says Sette during her interview.
