Do you still remember Berta? Way back in 2018, a homeless man from Cebu City became viral on social media after his video spread like wildfire. Despite his unkempt appearance, Berta surprises many passersby because of his intelligence and ability to speak English fluently. Because of this, he was dubbed as the most famous beggar in the Philippines.
Berta wowed the netizens with his eloquence in English. He lives on the streets and often relies on the kindness of passersby to give him food and money.
Soon after going viral on social media, Berta slowly faded away into obscurity. A few months ago, documentary show “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho” revisited Berta to see how he is coping amid the pandemic.

As it turns out, Berta, with the help of a local vlogger and local government officials, has been admitted to a rehabilitation center. There, he was kept out of the streets and was given a fresh start in life.
In the past, he was wearing tattered clothes and his hair was long and matted with dirt. But ever since he was admitted, Berta’s life has dramatically changed for the better.
Indeed, you can barely recognize Berta now! From begging on the streets, Berta is now the one giving back to others. His transformation from begging to giving is truly astounding.
In a recent video, the group Battle Against Ignorance Foundation Inc. and Safehaven showed their latest project with Berta. Amid the pandemic, they gave meals to street dwellers in Fuente Osmena, Cebu.
Many netizens were inspired with how far Berta has come in his life. Indeed, if it weren’t for the help of people who love him, Berta will still be homeless now.
This just goes to show that if you sow kindness, you will surely reap the rewards.
