The first edition of Miss Universe Philippines went out with a bang, after Miss Ilo-Ilo Rabiya Mateo was crowned as the winner. However, as soon as the pageant was over, controversies sprouted about who should be the real winner. One of the contestants, Miss Taguig Sandra Lemonon, spoke out on social media about the ‘injustices’ in the competition.
“Accepting defeat graciously is one of many marks of being a Queen. But what you forgot to say is that REAL queens play FAIR and don’t CHEAT,” wrote Lemonon on Instagram shortly after Mateo was crowned the winner.

She also talked about ‘spilling the tea,’ or revealing the secrets of the pageant. Many netizens claimed that Lemonon might just be ‘bitter’ about losing the pageant, but some also believed that she had a good reason for speaking out.
Some netizens also trusted that Lemonon will reveal only the truth. They pointed out that she has been a seasoned candidate, and was defeated twice. In spite of that, she never once spoke out against any ‘injustices.’
That being said, some netizens thought that something unfair and serious might have happened which compelled her to speak.

On the other hand, Miss Universe Philippines stands on its decision in crowning Rabiya Mateo. In a statement by the board director Albert Andrada, the organization did not mention anything about Lemonon’s threat to ‘spill the tea.’
“As of this time, we are standing by Rabiya Mateo as the first winner of Miss Universe Philippines. We are also grateful to our sponsors, stakeholders, and supporters who sustained us throughout the holding of the first edition of Miss U PH franchise, amid the limitations of the pandemic.”
