Amid the coronavirus pandemic, online classes are the ‘new normal’ for schools. In order to avoid the risk of catching the virus, all schools in the Philippines suspended face-to-face learning and opted for online class instead. However, although this might be safer, online learning also poses a lot of challenges not only for the students, but for the teachers as well.
The most persistent problems that students are facing are the lack of laptop or tablet, unreliable internet connection, and their modules.
But these challenges did not stop a hardworking teacher from Surigao del Sur to deliver the modules to his students.

Teacher Moises Palomo works in a private school in Tandag City. Due to the lack of internet connection in his students’ area, Teacher Moises had to cross a river while carrying the modules for the students.
His life-threatening efforts were even caught on camera and went viral on social media.
“Sa amin marami ang mga bahay na walang internet connection. Kaya ang ginagawa namin, nagpo-produce kami ng mga reading material para naman matulungan sila,” says Teacher Moises during his exclusive interview with “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho.”

Every day, Teacher Moises will wake up around 5 a.m. just to deliver the modules right on time. He had to walk for kilometers before finally reaching the river. Since no boats were available most of the time, Teacher Moises had no other choice but to swim across the river.
Teacher Moises sacrifice and efforts prove that everyone, including students and teachers, are struggling just to make online classes work but in spite of his efforts, some netizens criticized the teacher for allegedly ‘staging’ the scene.
Here are some netizens comment :
“Bakit ka lalangoy e meron namang bangka na sasakyan para di mabasa”
“hawak-hawak ang modules sa ilog ng di man lang binalot, ginagawa naman tayong bobo nito! “
For many months now, many people have been calling for an academic freeze until after the pandemic, but the Department of Education insisted on pushing through with online classes despite lack of resources.
