Everywhere you go in public, wearing a face mask is always required. This rule aims to lessen the risk of COVID-19 transmission. In some cities, law enforcement officers are authorized to arrest someone who is refusing to wear or is not wearing a face mask. However, this biker called out the injustice and unfair treatment he received after being arrested for not wearing a face mask in Marikina.
Michael Manansala shared his experience on Facebook. According to Manansala, he was biking on his way to work and he stopped in a public park to rest. He pulled his mask down briefly while drinking water when police officers approached and apprehended him.

“Nagpahinga lang ako, binaba ko face mask ko para uminom ng tubig dahil ang layo ng bina-bike ko mula Montalban to Mandaluyong para pumasok. Bigla ako hinuli ng mga pulis, pinasakay sa sasakyan at dinala sa headquarters nila.”
The biker was immediately escorted to the station and he did not even have time to take his bike with him. In the police station, Manansala was fined P1000 for not wearing his face for a few seconds. Moreover, he felt like a ‘holdaper’ or ‘rapist’ while his mug shot was being taken: “Feeling ko sobrang laki ng kaso ko, binaba ko lang face mask ko para uminom pero hinuli agad ako.”

Marikina City imposed a strict ordinance on wearing face mask at all times in public. However, the disappointed biker called out the law enforcement authorities for allegedly being ‘greedy’ amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He also added that his P1,000 penalty could have been used to buy a sack of rice for his family.
“Sana maging patas kayo. Wag kayong gahaman. Sana magtulungan tayo, hindi yung manggugulang ng tao dahil pandemic ngayon. At yung 1k na hiningi niyo sa akin, mahirap hanapin yan lalo’t walang-wala kami ngayon dahil sa pandemic. Pang bigas na rin yang 1k na yan,” says Manansala on his viral Facebook post.
