Amid the ABS-CBN shutdown, the Kapamilya network is cancelling projects left and right. While their franchise renewal case is still pending, the network had to cancel some programs in order to stay afloat. Among the programs which did not make the cut is Erik Matti’s upcoming action-packed movie “Darna.” Newbie actress Jane de Leon was chosen to portray this iconic Pinay superheroine in its big screen comeback.
According to Philippine Entertainment Portal, the decision to cancel “Darna” was purely a ‘business decision’ by the Star Cinema, the film company of ABS-CBN. Even though the show hasn’t aired yet, the Kapamilya network already shelled out more than P140 million for the production of the much-awaited series.

Jane de Leon was the third actress to be chosen for this role. Initially, the role was offered to Angel Locsin, who first portrayed “Darna” in the 2005 remake. However, due to health issues, Angel had to decline the role. It was then given to Liza Soberano, who had to stop mid-training due to her finger injury.
It was way back in 2013 when the Kapamilya network acquired the rights for the movie. Many fans have high expectations for the film, especially since it will be directed by renowned filmmaker Erik Matti. That being said, the decision to cancel the movie saddened many fans.

On the other hand, a showbiz insider told Fashion Pulis that the decision to drop “Darna” is not solely based on the budget. Apparently, some of the executives of ABS-CBN were not impressed with Jane de Leon’s attitude. The young actress recently went viral for her opinion about the ABS-CBN shutdown, which was interpreted as a shade against former “Darna” star Angel Locsin.
Because of her sentiments, Jane received backlash on social media. Some critics called her ‘ingrate’ for allegedly failing to stand up to her home network. To control the damage of her public image, Jane and Angel Locsin later on appeared together in a video conference, but netizens didn’t buy the ‘promotion.’
